What is a Heat Pump?

The heat pump functions in such a way that it keeps your home warm during winter and makes it more relaxed during the sizzling summers. As one of the most beneficial appliances for homeowners, HVAC systems perform the function of two appliances over the year. In addition, they are more eco-friendly than furnaces, as they complete work on electricity.

The basic working of a heat pump

The heat pump takes air from the environment, extracts the heat, and transfers it to the coolant in the winter season. The coolant is further compressed to raise its temperature significantly. Now the coolant is transferred to the indoor heat pump unit, where the air is passed over the hot coolant making the air gain temperature as per the thermostat and then warming up the room.

In the summer season, The whole process is reversed, i.e Now the air present in the indoor air is taken in by the indoor unit, and the heat is transferred from the air to the coolant present. Then the coolant is passed to the outdoor unit, where it gives out the heat, and then the coolant is sent back.

The heat pump has mainly 2 parts. One is the wall cassette which is fixed inside our rooms and the other unit that is outside.

  • Wall cassette

A thermostat fully controls it. The thermostat device makes sure that the temperature of the air is of the temperature that is set.

  • The outdoor unit

It functions accordingly depending upon the temperature set. For example, if the temperature is set to cool, the propeller present in the outdoor unit acts as an exhaust fan to push the heat out. Conversely, when there is a cooling requirement, the propeller acts as a fan pushing all the air inside.

Benefits of having a heat pump

A heat pump is like a two-in-one device. As the heat pump uses only electricity to work, it is highly efficient. If we use the generic electric space heaters or electric baseboards, their work rate is one unit of heat for a unit of electricity. At the same time, the electric heat pump technology can get 3-4 units of heat out of one unit of electricity. High efficiency leads to lower electricity bills.

Drawbacks of having a heat pump

Apart from all the benefits of a heat pump, there are also drawbacks. Maintenance costs are comparatively high, possibilities of leakages in case of any clogging, frozen coils can lead to higher electricity bills.

In icy areas, the heat pumps fail as the low temperatures in these areas lead to the ice formation on the coils leading to low heat transfer, and then when it starts to melt out, it might lead to leakages.
